The Basics:

  1. Your backing should be about 6” larger than your quilt top on all sides and your batting should be about 4” larger than your quilt top on all sides.

  2. Press your quilt top and backing.

  3. Trim all loose threads on both the front and back of your quilt top. This is especially important if you have very light/white fabrics in your quilt.

  4. Remove the selvage edge from the backing seams if the backing is pieced.

  5. The quilt top, backing and batting should be separate. Do not pin or baste together.

  6. Ensure that all seams are fully sewn.

Common Issues

Batting & Backing:

  • Selvages on edges are fine as long as they aren’t tight. If the selvage is tight then it should be removed. Your backing seams should be 1⁄2” and can be pressed to the side or open.

  • If your backing is not large enough I may be able to add strips of fabric for loading at the cost of $5-$10/strip (depending on backing size and material).

  • Quilt top and backing should be squared with straight edges. Flared or tight borders can result in puckering during quilting.

  • Batting from a bolt is preferred, but if you are using packaged batting please spritz it with water and fluff in the dryer before dropping it off. This is not required for wool batting.

Stitches & Seams:

  • If I find a ripped/unsewn seam prior to loading the quilt I may be able to repair if for a minimum of $5/seam.

  • Mark the top of your quilt and/or backing with a pin if they are directional.

  • Stitch edge seams 1⁄8 inch from the edge in order to prevent split seams on pieced borders.

  • Three dimensional embellishments such as buttons, beads, heavy trims, etc. will interfere with longarm quilting and should be applied after quilting is completed.

  • If you are using scalloped edges, cut them after the quilt has been quilted.
